Everybody knows and loves the travelling cinemas as a special form of outdoor cinema. However a cinema only powered by the sun is an unique experience – both for attendees and staff. Dutch filmmaker Maureen Prins started the Solar Cinema in the Netherlands in 2006 to bring unseen films to unusual places and to promote the use of renewable energy.
Whether parks, local squares, locations on the beach or even gravel pits – there are no limitations for such a mobile cinema. Especially with their inflatable movie screens the set-up is very easy and the whole stuff can be carried in a small car.
In 2010 the new brand ECOCINEMA was created to internationalize the project. Nowadays ECOCINEMA is travelling around Mexico, Chile, Uruguay, Brasil or Ecuador and there are many more to come in 2015.

The Amsterdam open-air cinema season has drawn to a close for this year ending with a spectacular drive-in event in the city. Over 8 days spectators were treated to a diverse selection of films including ‘Blues Brothers’ and ‘Thelma & Louise’ all shown on a giant 12 x 6m (40′ x 20′) inflatable movie screen.
There were over 60 cars in attendance as well as a large number of walk-in audience members who came by foot or in true Amsterdam style by bike. Guests were not only treated to blockbuster films but also DJ’s ensured that the musical atmosphere was equally as exciting for those in attendance long after the film was over. Guests didn’t even need to get out of their cars to pick up refreshments, but instead ordered whatever they desired via SMS from the comfort of their cars and their food and drink was delivered straight to their vehicle.

The cruise ship ’Costa neoRomantica’ was recently introduced to the world of open air cinema after AIRSCREEN installed one of their inflatable movie screens on board the newly renovated ship. Two AIRSCREEN technicians were on board to install the screen and to ensure that the passengers on board really got to enjoy the best of open air cinema on the high seas. Up to 1,800 passengers fit on board and amongst other activities such as a spa, casino and discotheque they are now able to enjoy the latest films whilst cruising around the Mediterranean or further a field.
Next to a shopping centre, a gym and many restaurants, the 12 floor Costa ship now has the inflatable screen in its repertoire. This screen was perfect for the cruise ship as it is set up and taken down in minutes and this means it can be installed when it needs to be, for example when a romantic evening of on board cinema should take place. Not only this but the passengers are then able to enjoy one of the finer things about holiday life, a cocktail or two from the on board ‘ Saint-Tropez bar.
Münster’s very own AIRSCREEN Company provides the perfect screen for the premiere of German cult classic TV programme ‘Tatort’ (crime scene).
The national premiere of the German cult classic ‘Tatort’ was shown in the shadows of Münster’s most famous landmark, the Castle. With more than 3,200 people in attendance, the open air cinema was full to the rafters or rather the clouds. The German classic which is now in to its 20th episode of Münster Tatort alone was a sell out from the day it was announced.
With many of the actors in attendance and many other special guests, the inflatable movie screen was the perfect solution for the open air cinema event.
